Concept for a magazine cover: Take a light-skinned Asian woman from a culture that promotes the use of skin lightening creams and surround her with dark-skinned women (scratch that, make it women in black face) with the cover line “Stepping Out of the Shadows.” Nothing amiss with that picture, right?
Because they totally weren’t occupied trying to find a new creative director or anything, the good people at Dior have spent a lot of time and energy creating an “online magazine” that will provide its fans with news and information about the storied French fashion house. We give it three months, tops.
Normally it takes a cup of coffee with an extra shot of espresso to get our eyes all the way open and our hearts beating at a pace that feels like we’re functioning human beings in the morning. But this morning we thought we’d try a naked photo of Kate Moss.
Who’s taking over Dior? An easier question to answer would be, who isn’t? Today, another one of the young, talented names who had been bandied about as a contender for the job not only pulled his name out of the running — he said he’d never even been considered in the first place.
We wonder if Valentino ever read this study.
We get that actor and part-time Dior spokeswoman Natalie Portman is a private lady, but what we don’t get is why she just won’t come out and say whether or not she’s married to dancer Benjamin Millepied. But the wedding band they were both wearing on their left hands at the Oscars this weekend definitely seem to suggest that is the case.
Evidence that The Hunger Games is going to be a transatlantic hit of epic proportions: Its star, Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence, is on the cover of both the British and American editions of Glamour‘s April issue.
Loath as we are to even consider the idea that any of the actors from Downton Abbey exist in a world that doesn’t involve titles and servants and a big house in the country, they do. And when they’re not pretending to be variously assorted members of the British nobility, they’re doing cool things like starring in modern jewelry ads.
The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa has determined that a set of billboard ads for a new fragrance line, Alibi, do not objectify women and are allowed to remain in public view.
The modeling industry is obsessed with youth, so it’s not surprising to find out that well known models have shaved a year or two off their age. But supermodel Agyness Deyn revealed Tuesday that she’s a full six years older than she’s claimed to be when she started modeling.
Viola Davis may not have walked away with the Oscar for Best Actress Sunday night, but as far as we’re concerned her decision to wear her hair natural — and not relaxed or covered up by a wig or otherwise processed — makes her the award show’s biggest winner.
Here’s the thing about the red carpet at the Oscars: Because it’s the most important award show there is, people look there more than any other place for inspiration when it comes time to get all dolled up. So if you see something on the red carpet more than a few times — even if it’s just a dress with one shoulder — you should probably pay attention.
If it turns out that Kanye can’t make this fashion thing work, maybe he might have a chance at a successful career in the shoe industry. We say that because the rapper-turned-designer made a pretty decent shoe for the London Fashion Week presentation of designer Dion Lee.
We hear the minutes-long standing ovation was really well deserved.
It was a prints party over at Prada for Fall 2012, where designer Muiccia Prada sent models down the runway in a sartorial symphony of brightly colored geometric designs in the form of dress-like coats over pajama bottom pants, cropped suits with mismatched blouses, and even briefcase totes to match.
Today isn’t the first time we’ve heard a rumor suggesting that designer Hedi Slimane is going to take over the creative director’s chair at Yves Saint Laurent, but for some reason, the industry is now taking the prospect a little more seriously.
Before she was Lady Gaga, Stefani Germannotta was just a 19-year-old waitress in the West Village. And that’s where she met photographer Malgorzata Saniewska, who shot Gaga’s first real photo shoot as a performer.
A midwestern entertainment company pissed off a whole legion of people this week when it staged a beauty pageant called the Battle of the Complexions, which pitted light-skinned and dark-skinned Black women against each other in an attempt to figure out once and for all which skin color is the best.
We hate to be those people, especially so early on a Saturday, but when we were going through photos of Versace‘s fall runway show, we couldn’t help but notice that a couple dresses looked more primed for yoga than the catwalk.
