Name That Scent: Anna Sui’s Fairy Dance Smells Like ‘Fruity Pebbles’

Fragrance reviews are silly, but sometimes, fragrance marketing is even sillier. What do “playful past times” and “nostalgia” really smell like? So from now on, we’ll be crowdsourcing our own fragrance reviews. Read on to find out what our office thought about the latest sample to land on our desk. This week, we’re sniffing Anna Sui‘s Fairy Dance.

Fragrance: Anna Sui Fairy Dance

What Anna Sui thinks it smells like: “Imagine a sunny afternoon in the enchanted rose garden; the warmth of the sun the rosy, fruity smell of the air, the deeper, delicious scents of the forest just beyond. Fairy Dance opens with sparkling top notes of tangerine, mango, and pink pepper; surprising the senses at every turn. At its heart, there is the rose … always the rose, Anna Sui’s favorite flower. Balanced by peony and bamboo, it creates a fresh, radiant warmth. Sandalwood, vetiver, and vanilla make up the base notes; yielding unforeseen seduction to a fragrance that is playful, fun, and magical!”

What we think it smells like:

  • “Crisp linen.”
  • “Lemons.”
  • “Roses — really strong at first but then more subtle.”
  • “Woah, grapefruit.”
  • “Floral with a little lemon and Pine Sol mixed in there — but the good kind that I would have been tempted to drink as a child.”
  • “Windex.”
  • “My teenage self.”
  • “Flowers dunked in citric acid and then bottled up.”
  • “Fruity, a little citrusy. I approve.”
  • “A more modern version of something my mom would wear. Very fruity, a bit overpowering. Also a little bougie.”
  • “Something royalty would wear to throw it in the faces of the plebes.”
  • “Heavy. Like someone who’s already wearing to much perfume.”
  • Fruity Pebbles. A medley of fake fruit.”
  • “Very floral.”
  • “Grandma floral. I feel like there should be baby powder in there.”
