As Summer Kicks Off, A Beauty Tribute To The Neo Burlesque
Inspired by the juxtaposition of beauty and grit in SHOW: Photographs by Henry Horenstein—on exhibit at Clic Gallery—for those looking to add a tinge of vampy fetishism to their beauty routine…look no further.
The show closes Monday so if you’re in NYC, definitely swing by to marvel at Horenstein’s often abstract take on his subjects, who haunt the underground vaudeville halls and clubs in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and New Orleans. (Horenstein, by the way, is a Rhode Island School of Design professor and celebrated photographer known as the “dean” of black and white photography.)
Horenstein defines “neo-burlesque” as encompassing fetish, drag and vaudeville acts, and he shot the performers featured in the show—such as Murray Hill, Dita Von Teese and Julie Atlas Muz—since 2001. I’m also looking forward to seeing Atlas Muz (pictured, at right, with Dirty Martini and director Mathieu Amalric), who I first saw at the original Galapagos when living in a Williamsburg garage next door, in “Tournée” which debuted in Cannes this month. Here, some of the images from Horenstein’s show, and some beauty picks to accompany them.
As summer begins, every New Yorker should take an annual pilgrimage to Coney Island if, for nothing else, to ride the Cyclone. And, to experience what’s left of the “real” Coney Island, best go now before it’s transformed into a more sparkly, cleaner version. (Personally, I prefer the Coney Island of lore, with its fascinating and ragtag throng of underground inhabitants prowling the boardwalk and back alleys.)
Beauty pick: What else? Bond No. 9’s Coney Island, an eau de parfum with notes of Margarita mix, melon guava, musk, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, cedarwood and sandalwood
Beauty pick: For a lip of such decadence, we turn to M·A·C cosmetics and their brand-new mobile site that just launched this week. Click to their Artists in Action how-to videos, where artist Nadine Luke creates a luscious black lip.
Beauty pick: Brows and false eyelashes, of course. This look is yours with a quick trip to Ricky’s, where you can pick up a slew of false eyelashes, or Sephora for a Glitter Eyes Palette and Brow Zings by Benefit.
