It’s impossible to test and review every single beauty product on the market, so that’s why we’re just highlighting the good stuff. You know, those lotions and potions with which we’re currently obsessed, and the beauty counter buys we believe everyone should know about. This week, our editor has fallen in love with a tan-faking body makeup.
It’s Memorial Day, which means some people are at the Hamptons soaking up the first 70-degree day in a while. Some people are hosting backyard barbecues, sipping lavender lemonade in the shade. And some people are crouched over a laptop, not at all bitter or sad about missing out on that vitamin D that’s abounding outside. But we’re okay! We don’t need real suntans!
When the LORAC TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer ($32) came across my desk, my first thought was “here we go, another streaky, stinky, self-tanning disaster,” but that was not the case. The product is actually a body makeup to rub on for an instantly tanned look that lasts all day, without any of the drama of a DIY tan (or dangers of actual sun exposure).
I’m pale to begin with, which means that I always feel unprepared to bare skin when the weather warms up. Most self tanning products (and trust me, I’ve tried them all), are a one-shade-fits-all formula that turns alabaster babes instantly orange, and leave streaks that make your secret weapon not at all a secret.
This is different. There’s no exact application to follow. You shmear the stuff on wherever you want a bit of an uptick in tone, and boom — insta tan. I even disregarded the product’s directions (which specify to use it on your legs) and rubbed the cream into my shoulders, arms, and decolletage — the first places to get sun-touched, so it looks natural. As for the usual pitfalls of at-home tanning: there’s no clothing rub-off, and the scent is like a less obvious interpretation of tanning oil. Sure, coconut makes an appearance, but it’s summer, go with it! The result is like brushing bronzer on your whole body without actually crushing your Chanel compact in one fell swoop. Basically, it’s a dream come true.
