In case you haven’t heard, nuts are the key to a longer life. A Harvard study tracked 119,000 men and women over 30 years and found that eating nuts regularly makes you 20 percent less likely to die early. In addition to that jaw-dropping fact, researchers found that heart disease dropped 29 percent and the risk of dying of cancer fell 11 percent for people that ate nuts at least seven times a week.
Full disclosure: we’re not nut eaters, but the study inspired us to to delve deeper into the benefits of the protein-rich food for health, as well as beauty. And if vanity is your favored draw, you’re in luck, because nuts can help also transform your skin, hair, and nails.
For one, all nuts are rich in antioxidants — most importantly, Vitamin E, which gives your skin it’s most powerful weapon: moisture. It has been proven to combat dryness thanks to potency, as well as increase skin’s circulation. And don’t even get us started on zinc, which not only maintains collagen for firmer, more supple skin, but also strengthens hair and nails. There’s also the omega-3 fats and selenium, which have similar benefits for achieving ayear-round glowy skin. If you’re most concerned with taming to your tresses, nuts contain biotin and Vitamin B6, which keeps hair from thinning.
We’re totally betraying anti-nut (yes, even peanut butter) childhood selves by saying it, but we’ve been missing out. It’s also worth noting that Alan Cumming is nuts for nuts (see picture above).
