When we first got wind of a Benefit Mascara commercial starring men, we envisioned beefcakes batting newly-defined lashes. What it was in actuality, is pretty NSFW – and we thought we’d seen some things.
Essentially, Benefit teamed up with viral video studio Portal A to put men, the most notable of whom being statement-browed Vinny from the Jersey Shore, on full display showing off some significant bulge while women swoon (um?). The unforeseen twist: the men reach into their pants and take out a tube of Benefit’s they’re real! mascara, which promises to trick onlookers into thinking your lashes are so BIG, they have to be false.
“We wanted to find a clever way to play on real vs. fake double entendre,” Claudia Allwood, U.S. director of marketing at Benefit Cosmetics,” told Mashable. “It’s irreverent and cheeky, so overt [you] can’t possibly take it seriously.”
Watch the video, entitled “Real Men Don’t Fake It, below, and let us know if think it was clever, or just too shamelessly lowbrow for it’s own good.
