Beauty School: How To Pull Off The Burgundy Lip Trend
“How can I work the burgundy lip trend without venturing into nineties goth territory?”
I love the burgundy lip trend, such a perfect look for autumn as the weather transitions and richer hues take center stage. As with any bold lip, it can be tricky to pull off. Here, are a few key considerations to keep in mind:
- Be sure that you get a colour that works for you. If you have extremely fair porcelain skin, and opt for the darkest plum shade, you will look goth, there’s no real way around it. If you have fairer skin, opt for colours with a bit more brown as bluish-undertones can make you look even more washed out. If you have olive skin, colours with an orange undertone can look stunning. Deep skin tones have the most flexibility here, as most of the bolder shades work well.
- Counterbalance the bold lip by ensuring that the rest of your look is minimal. As a general rule of thumb, pick one feature you want to have stand out. Don’t overcomplicate things by having a smoky eye here – too much makeup is sometimes just that, too much.
- Avoid looking washed out by creating a perfectly radiant complexion. Get this right with plenty of prep, an illuminating primer under the foundation, a perfect color match for your base, and the correct formula for your skin (you may have to mix several shades to achieve this). Liquid foundation absorbs well and is less likely to show in creases than heavier formulas, but if you prefer a mineral foundation, buff it really well to be sure it has absorbed properly.
Be sure to apply with precision and care, using a lip liner to avoid bleeding, and paint on with a makeup brush. Then, wear with confidence, perhaps the most critical component to the look!
