Backstage Beauty: Costello Tagliapietra’s ‘Android Librarians’
Even in the face of the impending blizzardpocalypse in New York City, the electric bright lipstick at yesterday’s Costello Tagliapietra show was enough to brighten anyone’s spirit. We went backstage with MAC Cosmetics to get the lowdown on the sophisticated spaceage look.
“I’ve always wanted to have a little bit of a futuristic feeling, but very elegant and ladylike,” explained the lead makeup artist as she blended a creamy camel paint pot over a model’s lids, “so I was like, ‘Why not android librarian from the future?’” Why not indeed. As it turns out, “android librarian” is an easier look to pull off that you might think.
The makeup artists used Pro Longwear concealer, Strobe cream, and Mineralige moisturizer in SP15 (hey, those runway lights are really bright) to create a base that they described as “quite matte, but really beautifully highlighted.” On the eyes, they began with the subtle camel cream to add some depth to the lids, but drew the attention to the lower lash line with a swipe of vivid violet Chromographic pencil in “Rich Purple” — where the “android” part of the equation comes in, we’re guessing.
The real story was the lips though. Maybe its because we happen to have both of these products at home and it would never have occurred to us to combine them, but we LOVE the ultrabright, ultramatte finish. The artists started with perennial favorite “Lady Danger” lipstick followed by loose fuchsia pigment powder in the center of the lips, “brushed on for a velvety finish.” Pro tip? Use plenty of tissue paper to avoid getting those hot pink flecks everywhere.
