Name That Scent: Unused Soap, Grandma, And A PowerPuff Girl

Fragrance reviews are silly. Fragrance marketing is even sillier. So from now on, we’ll be crowdsourcing our fragrance reviews. Read on to find out what our office thought about the latest sample to land on our desk.

Fragrance: Elie Saab Le Parfum, $90

What Elie Saab thinks it smells like: “Created by world-renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, Elie Saab Le Parfum is based on a floral, solar, woody theme. The first soaring notes of orange blossom set the tone, a solar evocation of Mediterranean petals who light echoes the sun at its height. The jasmine heart is enriched by the gentle shading of pure patchouli. A white flower bouquet is completed by a cedar woody accord, giving the floral notes new density. Finally, the trail unfurls, borrowing its addictives notes from rose honey.”

What we think it smells like:

  • “Like those seashell soaps that I never use.”
  • “Smells like candy.”
  • “A perfume that I own.”
  • “Kind of like middle-aged people’s bathrooms. Not old people, but people who came of age in the ’70s, and are not in the top 10 percent income bracket.”
  • “This is my ‘it smells like Grandma’ scent.”
  • “It doesn’t smell like perfume, it smells like potpourri or rubbing alcohol. Like a drunk woman at a buffet.”
  • “Potpourri from hell.”
  • “Like when you walk through a perfume section of a department store and have to cover your nose with your shirt.”
  • “Um, girly?”
  • “I’m gonna go with those little bottles of oil with the sticks in them.”
  • “Like a punch to my face… like PowerPuff Girl flew up and just popped me right in the face.”
  • “Very flowery. Still reminds me of old lady perfume.”
  • “I feel like I just tripped into a bed of honeysuckle.”
  • “Very flowery, but not overly strong. It’s not the worst. Kind of soapy, too.”
  • “It smells like flowers that are wearing perfume.”
  • “Flowers. Like literally though.”
  • “Like a car air freshener, but the car has been sealed for 30 years and left in the desert.”

Tune in next time when we review A Perfect Touch by Charlotte Ronson, “inspired by the magic of the beach and captures an endless summertime aesthetic”.
