WATCH: Emma Watson’s Lancome Commercial Is Not Very Good At All

Emma Watson‘s Lancome commercial has been a long time coming, and we hate to admit we really don’t like it.

It’s very narrative — and the narrative is not a particularly interesting one! And the commercial isn’t pretty enough to make up for that! Okay, it goes something like this: Watson dresses up like a boy (or Annie Hall) and goes to a bookshop. She asks the cute bookshop guy for help and “accidentally” leaves her fedora in the store.

The smitten bookshop boy keeps the hat and sits meaningfully at a cafe. He then runs after Watson upon seeing her walk by. He thinks she gets on a boat and is thus LOST FOREVER, but then she appears, almost kisses him, and the hat magically moves from his head to hers.

And it’s all because of Trésor Midnight Rose! Or something! Also, the music is really not great. This definitely skews more in the direction of Justin Bieber‘s Someday commercial as opposed to Natalie Portman‘s clip for Miss Dior Cherie. Poor Emma:

You’re so right! Oh the awful hat swap and 80s-esque music! She does well with a lousy concept.

Yeah, that was really strange. How did this happen? Did no one watch the first draft and think it was budget?

  • Minkiemink

That is completely cringe-worthy. Wonder who will be fired?

When I read the review, I didn’t think that the commercial could be as bad as you were saying it was. I really like Emma so I thought that she might make it good. I was so wrong, the commercial was rather awful. It just seemed to drag on and wasn’t very interesting.

Done quite well as far as I’m concerned. Nice to see the armchair critics who do next to nothing productive, are at it as usual.

    agreed. it’s awful

    The good:
    * I was really charmed by the Funny Face references– the whole thing seemed like an homage to Funny Face and Audrey Hepburn. Especially the look of the bookstore, including the ladder. (If you haven’t seen the movie, check it out. It’s a lighthearted classic of Hepburn’s.)
    * Emma’s look seemed like an updated version of Audrey’s feminine-yet-androgynous look. Loved it.

    The WTF:
    * The music was so very, very wrong.
    * The hat magically moving to her head seemed like an over-the-top Harry Potter reference.

Unfortunately, there are a few negatives about this advert such as the poor choice in music. I would have preferred for some dialect to be included and I wasn’t too sure how the story line related to the fragrance, but Emma’s classic beauty did make up up for everything. I’m very happy that she’s been chosen to feature in this advert and I hope she had fun making it :)

Wow… why does it look so dated? YIKES!

I’m ashamed to be in advertising after seeing commericals like these. Unfortunately that’s what 90% of them are: shit.

Why is everybody so negative… Emma is beautiful is this commercial! It’s not a waste of your time to look at it and the parfum smells very well.
