Iran Outlaws The Mullet (And Other ‘Decadent Cuts’)
As if Iran’s restrictions on fashion weren’t already harsh enough, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad‘s culture ministry has outlawed the mullet and other “decadent Western cuts,” The Telegraph reports. And while there are a few things we wish we could outlaw for being unstylish — not wearing pants, overzealous peplums, Miley Cyrus — we still kinda think this goes a little too far.
The new guidelines appear in a catalogue of government-approved hairstyles the culture ministry is going to promote at Iran’s Modesty and Veil Festival later this month. It’s sort of like those hair magazines you thumb through at your salon, except if you don’t pick a style out of this book in particular, you could be thrown in jail.
Other than the mullet, ponytails and spikes have also been outlawed, the rationale being that the approved hairstyles are more in tune with “Iranians’ complexion, culture and religion, and Islamic law,” said Jaleh Khodayar, who is in charge of that modesty festival we mentioned earlier.
Meanwhile, we here in America are giving people prizes for sporting mullets. And while both options are pretty extreme (Come on — who gives a prize for a mullet?), jail time for a hairstyle is as insane an idea as giving J-Woww a clothing line.
