Is Karl Lagerfeld Coming Out With A Book-Scented Fragrance? (Updated)

Rumor has it Karl Lagerfeld is coming out with a fragrance — a fragrance that smells like books…! Lagerfeld has teamed up with Steidl (the company that publishes his photography books) and German perfumer Geza Schön for the scent, which is called Paper Passion.

We’ve seen pictures of Lagerfeld’s impressive library (he allegedly owns over 300,000 books, by the way), so we’re confident he could do a book-scented perfume justice. And just to make things super fancy, “the fragrance will be sold encased within a hardcover book entitled Paper Passion.” This is certainly the perfect project for the Kaiser, who owns a Parisian publishing house and bookstore (and who is planning to open another stateside in the near future!).

Would you buy a book-scented fragrance?

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Karl Lagerfeld says the rumors, sadly, are not true. The full statement (including what are perhaps some faulty translation errors) below:

“Mr Lagerfeld refutes his implication in the launch of the perfume Paper Passion. This project, of which Mr Steidl told him about, only emanate [sic] from the art books’ publisher himself. Mr Lagerfeld copublishes many books with Mr Steidl but stick [sic] to Coty Prestige when it is about his own perfumes’ creations.”

Old paper has a sweet smell, a little like vanilla. Walk into an old book store and you’ll smell it.

Wallpaper magazine put together a publisher (Gerhard Steidl) who is renowned for working with vegetable inks in order that his books smell good, with a perfumer who is known for unusual scents (Geza Schoen.) Steidl’s good friend, Karl Lagerfeld, provided the name and a quick sketch of what the packaging might look like. It is not his perfume — but he did have a role to play.
