Katy Perry says she has over 100 beauty products on her makeup counter, so it’s pretty hard to argue with her when she calls herself a “beauty whore.” And what’s a pop singer and summer hit-maker to do when you have an aforementioned title to live up to? Release your own fragrance, of course!
In November, Perry will be battling fellow singers like Beyonce Knowles and Britney Spears at the beauty counter when her exclusive to Nordstrom fragrance , “Purr” by Katy Perry debuts. In her own words, the fragrance is “completely unlike anything [she’d] smelled before.”
Encased in a cat-shaped bottle with “jeweled eyes, metallic accents, and opulent lavender shading,” the animated fragrance contains notes of peach nectar, jasmine blossom, and creamy sandalwood — to name a few. And the specificity of scent is very important to Perry.
“My sense of smell is so important to me. A guy can walk into an elevator wearing Acqua di Gio, and I’m immediately like ‘You’re my first boyfriend.’ I want my fragrance to have that effect on people.”
As for the name, Perry explains, “I’m a very lyrical-based person, and the whole ‘purr’ thing kept coming back — [the sound is in] perfume, perfect, even Perry if you say it a certain way. It just seemed logical.”
When we first heard Perry was creating a signature scent, we couldn’t help but think sickly sweet and lots of Hello Kitty — and apparently we weren’t too far off. Perry cites Gwen Stefani, who, like Perry, loves Japanese anime and culture, as her role model of turning a name into a brand. On that topic, she turned down the idea of launching a fashion line, so in the meantime fans can only smell like the singer.
