Long Lashes: A Lasting Business Endeavor

In the past year, sales of fake eyelashes have gone up by 6.2 percent, making it an estimated $44 million dollar industry.

David Woolf, Vice President of American International Industries, told WWD, “Eyelashes are the fashion cosmetics of today…Retailers need to realize eyelashes are a cosmetic and that this is a category that has shown double-digit growth year after year.”

In addition to the fake lashes, shoppers are looking for a more lasting solution for the long-lash craving. Eyelash extensions — a process by which individual lashes are glued, one by one, onto your natural lashes — give you darker, longer, and more voluminous lashes for about a month.

Latisse, the prescription lash-growth aide, has been flying off of the shelves, as has the tamer option of volume-enhancing mascara.

How to continue the craze? WWD writes:

[The lash industry leaders] are trying to build the business around seasons, too. Halloween has always been a “no-brainer,” but now prom and other dress-up times are becoming popular for off-shelf promotions of lashes. Beyond traditional full lashes, there is growth from single lashes, as well as “half-lashes.” YouTube and other social media sites are helping women learn how to use false lashes, retailers said. Woolf added that women are more receptive to using artificial lashes as makeup trends favor a more finished look. “It is an aesthetic prosthetic.”

As a former eyelash extension obsessive myself, I’m the first to admit the beauty in a great, thick set of lashes. But keep in mind ladies, like any other beauty enhancer, there’s always the risk of overdoing it…
