MAC Cosmetics has made it a theme over the past few years to feature striking and sometimes unconventional female figures in its advertising campaigns. Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Dita von Teese have each appeared as faces of the line, and while obviously attractive by most of our standards, all women exude a certain combination of strength, individuality, and (at least in Gaga’s case) freakishness that doesn’t exactly conform to the old-school feminine ideals. The relatively recent inclusions of Dame Edna and Iris Apfel (with a red lip to end all red lips) have challenged the notions that beauty and glamour are limited to the realm of youth and femininity, and have helped to solidify the brand as a groundbreaker when it comes to the rules of cosmetics.
So it’s refreshing, but not a huge surprise, to see the company utilizing Serbian figure competitor Jelena Abbou in a recent ad for its new “Strength” collection. Given the name, Abbou is an apt choice; in the image, she flexes impressively muscled arms, wearing a MAC-typical dramatic face of makeup and what looks like a black latex ball gown. We tip our hats to the minds behind the new line for celebrating Jelena’s form, and hope they keep up the good work.
