New York Institutes Teen Tanning Ban

The dangers of tanning have been all over the media as of late (remember the beauty that is the tan mom?), and as a result, the New York Senate has recently decided to approve a bill that will stop kids 16 and younger from indoor tanning.

New York already has laws in place that ban children under 14 from tanning, but teens ages 14-17 are allowed in tanning booths with their parent’s permission. According to the Wall Street Journal, Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to pass the new law.

Beach Bum Tanning CEO James Oliver believes the cosmetics industry is to blame for the war on tanning, and that tanning is actually safe when done properly. The American Cancer Society and the World Health Organization beg to differ. It should also be noted that this is standard protocol in the UK.

Maybe this won’t stop teens from getting their tan on — and thus catching harmful rays — outside, but we say: way to go, New York! Sounds like a step in the right direction.
