According to the Associated Press, nail polish manufacturers marked bottles as toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and formaldehyde-free when they actually contained one or all of the chemicals. Known collectively as the “toxic trio”, these ingredients are linked to chronic health conditions like asthma, as well as developmental problems, when inhaled.
The polishes pose obvious concerns for salon customers, but the risk is greater for nail care technicians who spend their day inhaling fumes. The APP reports that salon owners are taking the report seriously and are properly ventilating their stores, which is something they should have been doing all along. In addition, some manufacturers are investigating their factories.
