Product Junkie: 5 Must-Haves For A Good Hair Day

The psychological impact of a bad hair day is one of those things—like eyelash curlers, or Rob Pattinson—that guys will simply never understand. Sure, it’s completely shallow, but if your hair looks awful (to your mind, at least), it’s game over.
[Ed Note: A recent study even proves it!]
That ever elusive good hair day, however? Angels sing! Praise Jesus! Hallelujah!
Over the years, I’ve done more than my fair share of research on the best products for a good hair day. (Blame it on the Leo in me.) Some of said research may or may not have involved craziness like extensions, spontaneous pixie cuts, and prodigious color swaps—Black! Red! Blonde!—that utterly baffled my poor boyfriend, who once said, “Can’t you just pick a style and stick with it?” No, my dearest, I cannot.
I’ve put my own hair through the ringer, but all the experiments have led to the following list of foolproof genius products for the best hair day of your life.
Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner, $45 each: This stuff is like liquid gold. I’ve tried hundreds of shampoos, from luxury companies and department stores and drugstores and indie boutiques—and this camellia oil-laden shampoo/conditioner duo outperforms them all. Smells great, makes hair feel like silk, and just a tiny dollop works, so no need to waste it. God forbid it were ever discontinued—I’d buy 25 of each.
MoroccanOil Oil Treatment, $37: Argan oil, which has been used by women in Morocco for ages, has suddenly exploded onto the beauty scene, and this intensive treatment oil has been at the forefront. It does it all: battles frizz, conditions, protects against UV rays, strengthens hair, gives shine, etc, etc, etc. Magically, considering how superhydrating it is, it doesn’t weigh hair down or make it greasy in the slightest. A must-have.
LiQWD Volumizing Catalyst, $28: Everybody in the beauty world is talking about nanotechnology and how it’s the future of products. I don’t really care about the science, just the results; and boy does this volumizing spray deliver. For fine, thin, limp or flat hair, it’s an absolute Godsend, giving you three-times the volume with just a few spritzes. For already-full-tressed girls like me, it equals Victoria’s Secret hair. Either way, it’s the best volumizer I’ve ever used.
Living Proof No Frizz Straight Making Spray, $14: Created by a group of fancy-pants MIT scientists who discovered a new polymer that coats hair without weighing it down, this is without a doubt the best anti-frizz product on the market. If you’re a frizz-prone gal, this will change your life.
L’Oreal Elnett hair spray, $13.99: This legendary spray used to be impossible to find in the states, so of course, all the beauty insiders would bring back several contraband cans on trips to Europe. Now, blessedly, it’s available at Target so non-jetsetters can see what all the fuss is about. It’s beloved because it holds (I mean, we’re talking Texas beauty queen, lasts through a storm, can create any style hold) but it’s also extremely flexible and brushes out easily. It’s the gold standard hairspray, and the iconic bottle that you’ll see backstage at every fashion show.
