Rachel Roy Bursts Onto The Beauty Scene, Shares Her Best Makeup Tips
We visited Roy’s showroom to get the details on her very first beauty product, the Rachel Roy Eye Shadow Collection. The 10-shadow, two-brush palette is split into warm day and cool night colors with varying degrees of shimmer. We’ve long admired Roy’s bold makeup looks — she’s perfected both the smokey eye and the bold lip — and we were delighted to learn she always does her own makeup for events. (Yes, just like Kate.) In fact, she showed off her application skills at the intimate gathering while she answered all of our beauty questions.
Her obsession with makeup began at a young age, and she was inspired by the women in her family. “All of my aunts on my dad’s side didn’t have much. But they had beautiful saris, plastic bangles up their arms, and a kohl eye — no matter what,” she explained. “Some of them went to clean because they were maids, but they were the most beautiful maids.” She still prefers her eyes dark and smudgy, with tons of mascara (Estee Lauder Turbolash is her go-to).
We were further charmed to learn that Roy’s signature strong brows come courtesy of a woman named Reshma, who happens to have a threading outpost in the Rockefeller Center subway station. “I get them threaded, which is also an Indian tradition, and it’s super cheap,” she said of Reshma’s skilled work. “Even if it was expensive, I would do it because it’s the best thing for my face.” And just like us, Roy isn’t great about taking off her makeup. But with makeup like hers, why would you want to?
The Rachel Roy Eye Shadow Collection is available on the Rachel Roy website, as well as at Macy’s, for $32.
