Name That Scent: Mugler’s Men’s Scent Smells Like A 12-Year-Old Girl

Fragrance reviews are silly. Fragrance marketing is even sillier. So from now on, we’ll be crowdsourcing our fragrance reviews. Read on to find out what our office thought about the latest sample to land on our desk. This week, we’re taking a pass at Thierry Mugler‘s first scent for dudes.

Fragrance: Thierry Mugler A*Men, $88

What Mugler thinks it smells like: “Angel Men, the first perfume for men by Thierry Mugler, offers an unexpected shock of woody and fiery notes. When creating Angel Men, Thierry Mugler was inspired by a vision of an imaginary hero moving through a legendary universe in which the past, present, and future merge.”

What we think it smells like:

  • “Smells like cotton candy.”
  • “Why does it smell different up close than when it’s in the air? Now it’s woodsy.”
  • “Close up, it smells like a man. From further away, it smells like a 12-year-old girl. What strategy are they going for?”
  • “Whoa. It’s like molecular gastronomy, except for perfume. It’s like if Richard Blais made a perfume. That’s crazy.”
  • “It smells like a middle school locker.”
  • “Notes of Fruity Pebbles. Also really powdery. Breakfast.”
  • “Baby powder.”
  • “Pretty strong. Not a huge fan. It’s kind of like bathroom deodorizer.”
  • “Mostly soapiness, like you just walked into a bathroom. Almost vanilla-y too. There’s something I can’t exactly place, but it’s familiar.”
  • “Smells like the things you put in the drawers, like those cedar blocks.”
  • “It’s a little on the strong side for me. Kinda floral, but sterile. Like someone trying too hard to make a hospital room smell like flowers.”
  • “Smells like someones taking a bath with bath beads.”
  • “It’s like burly man walking through the woods. In the good way, not the ‘I just took a three hour hike’, but like ‘I’m a mountain man and probably have a beard’ kind of way. But that’s not something I’m attracted to.”
  • “A carnival in a forest.”
