Name That Scent: This Limited Edition Fragrance Smells Like ‘Spring Break’

Fragrance reviews are silly, but sometimes, fragrance marketing is even sillier. What do “playful pastimes” and “nostalgia” really smell like? So from now on, we’ll be crowdsourcing our own fragrance reviews. Read on to find out what our office thought about the latest sample to land on our desk. This week, we’re sniffing ANGEL Aqua Chic by Thierry Mugler.

Fragrance: ANGEL Aqua Chic by Thierry Mugler, Summer 2013 edition, $85.

What Thierry Mugler thinks it smells like: “ANGEL Aqua Chic, a floral oriental fresh fragrance, provides the perfect temptation for summer sensations and delights, infused with aromatic rose water and revealed with a sparkling freshness. A delicate and acidulated rose water unravels at the heart of ANGEL Aqua Chic and blends with a fruity and juicy raspberry blossom and green apple granité accord, to refresh the most voluptuous of Mugler’s creations.”

What we think it smells like:

  • “The beach. Like going into a beach house right when it opens for the summer.”
  • “Light and airy. It’s like opening a window whose curtains are blowing in the wind and seeing the pretty flower field right beyond it.”
  • “A bad hair product when you were 12.”
  • “Grapefruit.”
  • “Nondescript. Generic.”
  • “Cheap bodywash.”
  • “Artificial floral.”
  • “I am amazed at how different the beginning and end of the smell are. But I guess the shower floor at my gym…which is mostly soap.”
  • “What the bathroom smells like after my teenage brother is finished taking a shower.”
  • “Pretentious Axe.”
  • “A college freshman’s idea of Spring Break. Tropical with Margarita undertones. Like ‘Screw you, mom!’”
  • “Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ performance on Saturday Night Live.”
  • “What a college freshman thinks a lady smells like.”
  • “Generic.”
  • “A dressed up mall girl.”
