Name That Scent: Valentino’s Valentina Fragrance Smells Like…

Fragrance reviews are silly. Fragrance marketing is even sillier. So from now on, we’ll be crowdsourcing our fragrance reviews. Read on to find out what our office thought about the latest sample to land on our desk.

Fragrance: Valentino Valentina, $80-108

What Valentino thinks it smells like: “With attitude, sophistication and unexpected characteristics, the bouquet of Valentina blends an irreverent Italian floral oriental in which each facet reveals a paradox. Calabrian bergamot is a hymn to exuberance and freshness, shaken up by the insolence of white Alba truffles. In their trail, jasmine, Amalfi orange blossom and tuberose celebrate radiant beauty, while being offset by the rebellious delight of wild strawberries.”

What we think it smells like:

  • “Powder and candy and sugar.”
  • “Powdery, like old powdery. Like old grandma powdery.”
  • “Floral wallpaper that you would find at your grandma’s house, in a good way.”
  • “Old folks.”
  • “Like when all the perfumes in a department store mix into one.”
  • “Flowers and bubble bath. Not together, but next to each other.”
  • “An upper-middle class bathroom mixed with liquid propellant. There’s a hint of ethanol.”
  • “Bath & Body Works and alcohol.”
  • “Soapy. Like something you would use to clean yourself.”
  • “Sweet and lilac-y.”
  • “Cotton candy gum.”
  • “A lot of vanilla and marshmallows.”
  • “Pink SweeTarts.”
  • “A French whore…is that acceptable?”
  • “Exactly how I thought perfume was supposed to smell like when I was a kid.”

Tune in next week when we review Dolce & Gabbana The One Sport which involves “an unmistakable Mediterranean aroma of rosemary, the freshness of water and saltiness of the sea”.
