For many women, the process of putting makeup on is something we tend not to think about very much. If you’ve been wearing makeup regularly for several years, it becomes similar to getting dressed. It’s just part of what you do to go out. You never really reflect on the action of pulling a shirt on your head.
But if you haven’t ever worn makeup, the application can seem tedious, if not entirely befuddling. That’s the takeaway from the video below, which shows what happens when professional makeup artists put makeup on a group of men who’ve never before experienced the sheer agony of trying to get your eyeshadow just right.
While perhaps the video points out, as Bustle notes, the gendered nature of makeup and even beauty, the most jarring part of the video isn’t how the men look after their makeovers. After all, a man in lipstick is nothing new. The most notable thing in the video is how much the men shown simply loathe having makeup put on their faces, and how uncomfortable the physical sensation is for them. Some choice quotes:
“It feels like I’m getting grosser.”
“I see the brush in my eye and I just want to chicken out and move out of the way.”
“Can I just say, for the record, I’m no longer enjoying myself.”
“It feels like its been ten minutes where she’s just been poking at my eyeball.”
“She’s using this mini rake.”
“That is the worst.”
So as you can see, the men in the video were a little whiney, but to be honest, their reactions are fascinating. When most women learned to wear makeup, we were desperately trying to be cool or to fit whatever beauty standards we thought were necessary. But when it comes down to it, we are brushing and jabbing some of the most sensitive parts of our body, and most of us have just gotten hardened to it.
It’s a reminder that most men don’t feel the need to go through the uncomfortable procedure of makeup application. And while perhaps it is unfair that women do have such ridiculously high beauty standards, it also kind of makes us badass. Men who can’t handle a little eyeball jabbing? Wimps.
