Today is Linda Evangelista’s birthday, so it seems like an appropriate time to talk about my favorite face of the 1990s. Don’t get me wrong, I love Naomi. But there’s always been something about Linda that makes her my favorite of the nineties supermodel crew —even though she’s not as quite as infamous as some of her counterparts.
Though you wouldn’t guess it from her name and the number of Vogue Italia covers under her belt, Evangelista is actually from Canada. She’s also the one who coined the saying “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.” Awesome, right?
More importantly, though, she’s the reason that for a period when I was younger, I always lifted my upper lip an unnatural amount when smiling — a pathetic attempt to mimic her amazing smile. She’s got the best gums in the industry, without a doubt.
Karl Lagerfeld describes her as “a kind of Stradivarius” of models, because, as he put it, “you can play her like you can play no other instrument.” Amber Valletta once said “Linda probably loves modeling more than anyone I know. That;s why we all love looking at pictures of her.”
And t’s true. While it can feel that a lot of today’s models really just love the spotlight, the best part of Linda Evangelista is that it’s always seems she really loves fashion in its purest sense. She always seems to be having a great time in front of the camera.
So in that vein, let’s look at some of the most fun photos of the woman who doesn’t just vogue, she is Vogue.
