We know that the truth about real people blows everything else out of the water. The real women of New York are fascinating. They’re engaging, they have refined opinions, and they do stuff with impact. They also dress cool. We don’t believe in the privacy of their feelings, nor of their stories. While the selfie generation is busy altering reality on Instagram, a few people, us included, are burning to get real girls on the street talking, laughing, and schooling.
Yesterday, we caught up with Kimbery Hugonnet, the Vice President Fashion Director at Macy’s, on her way out of the Creatures of Comfort show at Pier 59 Studios. Her gig is all about accessories, so we chatted her up about her Day 1 style, the casual shoe trend, and how to explain fashion week to people who aren’t fashun girls.
So what do you have on today?
This [dress] is BCBG, Chloé shoes, Céline bag, and a vintage necklace I bought in the South of France.
How did you find the necklace?
It was just in a little boutique, and I saw it and fell in love with it.
So is that a place you frequent, the South of France?
I do go often, only because my husband is French, and his mother grew up there…
Is that his best quality? Be honest.
(Laughs.) He’s got a few. He makes me laugh. That’s what’s most important.
How long have you two kids been beaching it in foreign locales together?
We actually celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary today!
Whoa. Congratulations. That’s a big deal.
Yeah. It’s amazing. But we’ve been together for quite some time. We’ve been together for eleven years total.
Is he annoyed that it’s fashion week and a bunch of people in platforms are kind of stealing the shine today?
It’s kind of funny because he never really understands it. I mean, I’ve worked in the fashion industry for 15 years, and he’s always like, what’s happening? Why are you wearing that?
How do you explain it to him?
(Laughs.) I just tell him, “this is fashion, trust me, I understand.”
So if you’re dressing up a bit more today, what do you wear to chill out in?
Well, I’m all about the slip-on sneakers since they’re definitely trending, but they’re so comfortable. Stan Smiths, from adidas… I’ve been wearing those a lot with just a simple dress or maybe skinny jeans. I’m definitely into the whole casual shoe.
At least that’s more than Kate Moss wore when she wore her Stan Smiths. That was super casual.
Why’d you go with that flower headband for today?
I must stay, I was having a bad hair day so I was trying to figure out how to manage it, so this is what happened (laughing.)
You seem pretty mellow. How are you staying relaxed?
You know what? This is the fun part. Honestly, it’s very busy. There’s a lot going on, but this is the fun part where you have all the creativity, the beautiful fabrics, the beautiful collections. It’s worth it.
