Somewhat inexplicably, Derek Blasberg broke both the news of Julia’s pregnancy and of her birth-giving:

We don’t have deets on the sex or name of the baby yet, but it looks like that naked, pregnant pic arrived just in the nick of time. (And FYI, the dad is Julia’s longtime boyfriend and one-time cover co-star Robert Konjic.)

The fancy film festival started in France today, and A-listers like Diane Kruger, Tilda Swinton, Freida Pinto, Bérénice Bejo, and Jessica Chastain showed up at the opening ceremony.

Kruger wore a sexy Versus dress earlier this morning and switched to a show-shopping Giambattista Valli couture gown, while Swinton changed from one Haider Ackermann ensemble to another. Pinto looked girly in a pink peplum Michael Angel number, Bejo’s red Louis Vuitton gown was nothing short of stunning, and Chastain’s white Alexander McQueen dress had pockets. Team Pockets!

In 2009 and 2010, Skechers ran ads that claimed its shoes increase muscle activation, help burn calories, and improve posture. We’re not sure what “muscle activation” means, but we’re always skeptical of products that claim to help with weight loss just by wearing it. A class action lawsuit was filed against Skechers last year for these false claims. Companies like New Balance and Reebok have also found themselves in a similar legal trouble.

According to the New York Daily News, the FTC said the ads falsely claimed that the shoes (specifically, the Resistance Runner style) would increase “muscle activation by up to 85% for posture-related muscles and 71% for glutes”.

For further context, some of the Skechers ads featured Kim Kardashian breaking up with her trainer because she’s wearing Skechers shoes, while others show Brooke Burke claiming “once my Skechers Shape-ups are on, I’ll be toning muscles and burning calories”.

Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection David Vladeck explained to the Los Angeles Times:

“But when comparing its toning footwear to standard fitness shoes, Skechers put its foot in its mouth by making unproven claims that its toning footwear strengthened muscles, increases weight loss, reduces body fat, and improves circulation and aerobic conditioning. They said that people lost weight when in fact they gained weight.”

Most of the money from the settlement will be used to issue refunds to consumers who bought the shoes. There’s no word on if Skechers has to pull products from stores.

Yesterday Moss attended a fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care in London, where she helped rocker Ronnie Wood auction off a painting of Rod Stewart. The two sold the portrait for £12,000, or around $15,300. Not bad!

Moss also took the camera from her pal David Bailey and snapped pictures during the event. And it was a big, fancy camera, at that! Check it:

In his interview with the mag, Cruise explains that Stacee Jaxx (his character in Rock of Ages, which he recreated for W) seems like a person who would have a best friend baboon:

“After working for weeks on Stacee’s technical skills, I was thinking about the character, and I said, ‘You know what? I need a monkey.’ Adam [Shankman] said, ‘What the fuck are you talking about?’ And I said, ‘I’m serious—I need a monkey. When Stacee’s not onstage, he’s kind of sad.’ And I thought, ‘This guy has to have a monkey that’s his best friend.’ Adam found this baboon. He sent me the baboon’s audition tape, and I said, ‘The baboon’s name has to be Hey Man’. Stacee Jaxx doesn’t work without Hey Man.”

The baboon had to make an audition tape? Sure.

The glamourous film festival on the French Riviera draws all sorts of celebs in all sorts of clothes (but mostly a lot of sophisticated dresses and light-colored suits). For now let’s take a look at Tilda Swinton, Diane Kruger, and a curiously-clothed Bill Murray.

Becks and the LA Galaxy soccer team visited the White House on Tuesday, where he debuted a weird new mustache/goatee/beard combo. It’s super odd, but mostly just ugly. (It also reminds us of Johnny Depp‘s Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.)

Oh, and Michelle looked great in a white Moschino top. Barack looked nice, too.

Cannes is upon us! Let the fashion commence!

We’ll be doing tons of red carpet coverage for the world’s most fashionable film festival, but first let’s discuss what Carine Roitfeld is bringing to the table. The former Vogue Paris editor/current eponymous mag editor/perennial well-dressed lady is putting on a fashion show at next week’s amfAR “Cinema Against AIDS” gala, and every single piece will be black. But of course!

According to WWD, the entire collection will be auctioned off and will include pieces from, well, everyone — Alexander Wang, Armani, Balenciaga, Cavalli, Chanel, Christopher Kane, Dior, Fendi, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Pucci, and Versace.

Très chic, non?

Karl Lagerfeld and Snoop Dogg in the same music video? (Karl Lagerfeld in any music video?) Well, good morning!

The unlikely pair — who never actually meet onscreen — star in the video for Jean-Roch‘s “Saint-Tropez”. (For the uninitiated, Jean-Roch is apparently a Eurotrash electropop DJ type.) Surprised? This is actually something that has been in the works for quite some time.

The plot of the video is quite complicated: Jean-Roch and Karl meet in heaven, realize Saint-Tropez is heaven, and stroll its streets. In a parallel storyline (see, complicated!), Jean-Roch and Snoop hang out in a different part of the town, then go to a party on the beach at night. Snoop fist pumps a lot. The end.

To refresh: Condé Nast International and Vogue announced a plan to encourage healthy body image within the mag’s pages and in the fashion industry. Will it work? We don’t know, but at least influential industry folk are supporting it.

In Banks’s open letter to models, she points to some bad career experiences, like getting blacklisted because she was curvy and being around 12-year-old girls when she was working in Paris. She hopes Vogue can stop others from being faced with the same ordeals.

“Vogue has the power to make and break — whether it’s fashion trends, designers, models, and yes, even industry practices. Their bold stance means that others will follow.”

But the problem of unhealthy body image isn’t just the modeling or fashion industry’s fault, which is why Banks sends a message to moms:

“To moms everywhere, we need to educate our girls not to fall prey to thinspirational images of beauty. So where do we start? By being very careful about how we talk about our own bodies in front of our daughters. We can show our daughters diverse images of beautiful women: curvy, tall, short, and everything in-between. Moms, you are the first and most influential role model in your girl’s life. Use that power. Teach her to love herself and everything that makes her unique.”

She has a dreamy fiancé, too.

Gaga was scheduled to perform at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on June 3. According to the AFP, 30,000 demonstrators from the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had plans to protest the pop star’s performance and threatened to stop Gaga from entering the country. Chairman of the FPI Salim Alatas explains:

“We will stop her from setting foot on our land. She had better not dare spread her satanic faith in this country. Her style is vulgar, her sexual and indecent clothes will destroy our children’s sense of morality. She’s very dangerous.”

The AP reports that local and national police were worried they wouldn’t be able to provide security and thus canceled the concert. Yeah, a woman who auctioned off her used teacup is super dangerous.

Mindy Kaling — online shopping addict, Alexander McQueen fan, girl crush of many — has a show that’s premiering on Fox this fall. Not surprisingly, it looks excellent.

The show is tentatively called The Mindy Project; it was previously called It’s Messy, and will probably go through at least one more name change before it debuts. Kaling plays a gynecologist (shades of her No Strings Attached character?), Ed Helms and Bill Hader are involved, and we just can’t stop rewatching the trailer.
