The Greatest Unintentional Review of Afropunk Fest

We’d be hard pressed to describe only using human words (we could probably come up with some fitting noises or gesticulations) just how dope this year’s Afropunk Fest — a two-day music and arts expo dedicated to celebrating the Black alternative scene — was: the beautiful, vibrant crowds; the eclectic, eccentric, and fearless style; the boundary-defying music that takes place over four stages and balances well-known headliners like D’Angelo and hardcore punk vets Bad Brains with up-and-comers like rapper Cakes Da Killa; the food; the shopping; the community; the creativity; the politics and the people. It was all spectacular and non-stop. In short, Afropunk Fest had no chill. Or the chill of Afropunk Fest had no chill. Everyone was chilling and nothing was chilling. Get it?

We think this Craigslist casual encounter ad can testify to the lure and power of Afropunk better than we ever can:

Look at what this man is willing to sacrifice in order to attend Afropunk! The kids aren’t willing to wait around and miss their chance at eating good BBQ while Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings tear up a stage, even when there’s blowjobs on the table! People abandoned their own Craigslist sex posts for Afropunk. What more needs to be said?
