10 Irish Bands You Need to Hear On St. Patrick’s Day

U2 not included.

While there’s a strong argument to be made for swigging beer while wearing odd-colored eyeliner and grumbling about Urban Outfitters, New York does that on most days of the year anyway. And since you know bars will be playing U2, why not celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the comfort safety of your own home or office?

Here are 10 tracks worth getting amongst on St. Pat’s, from emerging Irish rappers to guilty pop pleasures (hope you brought headphones to work):

1. Villagers — “The Waves”
Non-Irish person Psychemagik also does a great remix.

2. Lecs Luther — “Trumpets”
Dublin rap exists, and is bloody brilliant.

3. Boomtown Rats — “I Don’t Like Mondays”
Because it’s ALSO MONDAY.

4. Saint Yorda — “DISCO”
Get this Cork band on all your summer playlists.

5. The Undertones — “Teenage Kicks”
Put this band back on all your summer playlists.

6. Solar Bears — “She Was Colored In”
You wouldn’t be able to enjoy the full soundscape of this electronic duo in a noisy bar, so put in your headphones and bliss out.

7. The Cranberries — “Zombie”

8. Young Wonder — “Time”
Big beats, euphoric synths, sweet timbres and bit of James Blake vibes.

9. Sinead O’Connor — “Nothing Compares 2U”
Not directed by Terry Richardson:

10. B*Witched — “C’est la Vie”
