As far I’m concerned, the most appealing diets are, in fact, anti-diets. Forget pompous pressed juices, bland milkshakes and sweets bans, the blithe approach to staying slim that French women practice has always been what strikes my fancy. Considering that Marie Antoinette was French by default (although Austrian born, she married Louis XVI of France and became Queen of France) and always enjoyed the finer things in life, I was confident I could see eye-to-eye with the L’Autrichienne in matters of culinary fare. Although, I must admit, my sweet tooth hardly measures up to Sofia Coppola’s Antoinette, with her inexhaustible cravings for macaroon, vanilla pastries, and bubbly. However, in reality Antoinette wasn’t quite as confectionery as we’ve been lead to believe.
Shedding light on the late 18th-century queen’s slenderizing practices in the Marie Antoinette Diet is Karen Wheeler, a fashion and beauty journalist who lives in France. In the process of trying to lose weight for health reasons, Wheeler read a biography on Antoinette and wanted to put some of her tricks to the test. After coming up with a diet that allowed her to lose 10kg in 10 weeks, she felt she could give credence to Antoinette’s belief that eating cake for breakfast could promote weight loss.
