The Art of Instagram Fashion Photos

No #belfies necessary.

You can’t even eat a beignet these days without feeling the urge to photo, filter and post. Instagram rules our lives, so it makes sense that the ladies at WhoWhatWear would provide all of us amateur fashion photographers with some guidelines for achieving social media greatness.

Tip One: Strategically Stage Clothing
You are getting ready in the morning, and you obviously want to to shoot your outfit before you put it on. Maybe you are feeling bloated or you have a zit? Whatever. The clothes need to be seen, whether they are on you or on your floor. Before you start snapping away you need to stage your clothing like a real photo shoot. Does this feel contrived? Of course! It’s supposed to feel this way. You can either go neat and orderly or a little bit more haphazard. Let your decision reflect your personality.  Keep it interesting by adding a pop of color like a bright clutch. Bonus points for having a cool carpet. Rethink this type of post if your bedroom is a shithole. There is no Instagram filter in the world that will make that mocha latte stain disappear off your floor.

Tip Two: Pick A Background
WhoWhatWear wants you to get out of that bedroom. Nothing screams novice like a mirror shot with a bedspread in the background. Brick buildings always work. Think of ways to have your background serve as juxtaposition for your outfit. What about shooting that glamorous silk jumpsuit near a landfill? You’re an artist, so get creative.

Tip Three: Take It From The Top
Instagram hottie Jen Selter knows it’s not always about your face. Reaching for the sky and shooting from up above showcases your outfit. If your friend is as chic as you are, throw her in the pic as well. You’ll be like two well-dressed, headless mannequins, and that is the goal.

Tip Four: Put Ya Feet Up
Your shoes deserve their own style of photo. I mean you pay enough for them right? Prop them up wherever and whenever. Adding a handbag and a portion of your lunch will give your post a “these boots are made for walking” vibe. You are obviously a woman on the go.

Tip Five: Snap Your Accessories
If you are wearing 12 rings and four arm cuffs (as you should be!) you need to get closeups. Enough said.

Tip Six: Use A Hashtag
A clever hashtag shows that you are more than just a well-dressed outfit. Use your brain here! A hashtag can make or break your look. But don’t limit yourself to #instafashion or #OOTD – Zanna Roberts Rassi has incorporated her pregnancy into her fashion posts with #stylethebump.

Tip Seven: Add A Graphic
Once you download the Studio Design app, you automatically become a graphic designer, so start considering the power of overlays. This is how you look for an intern:
