PHOTOS: Did Elle India Lighten Aishwarya Rai’s Skin?

Aishwarya Rai‘s name is almost always preceded or followed by the phrase “the most beautiful woman in the world.” The 37-year-old Indian actress (and former Miss World) is without a doubt one of the most stunning women on the planet. But her appearance on the cover of December’s Elle India has caused some raised eyebrows.

Aishwarya is quite fair-skinned to begin with, yet she looks excessively pale on her latest cover. But before we start wagging fingers, let’s remember the Gabourey Sidibé Elle cover debacle. Perhaps this disparity in skin tone is also the work of some extreme studio lighting.

In contrast, Vogue India put out a dark-skinned issue this year and produced one of the 2010′s best covers. And as noted when we first reported on the groundbreaking issue, skin color is a sensitive topic in India. Nirupama Singh, an expert on the sociology of fashion told the Times UK: “Skin color matters a lot for women in India. Fairness is a very valuable thing here, looked on as desirable. The fashion world can be a big agent for change in this area.”

What do you make of the cover?

I think Aishwarya Rai is awesome. But they freaking photoshop and airbrush every freaking cover. Why is just Elle being targetted? Let’s face it, every magazine does it regardless of who is appearing on the cover.

And as someone said it, lighting matters a lot. That’s why you see a not-so-white Aishwarya on the red-carpet. Don’t expect her to look the same all day – in daylight and dark.

As much as I protest the color-struck beauty industry (and the color-struck world-at-large) – this article seems ….uniformed. I’m guessing you’re not really familiar with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s countless magazine covers/ads/films, etc. Unless she’s been sunning, Aish usually photographs very light, indeed. In fact, she is naturally fair-skinned. (“fair” as in “light” – as her beauty is not hue-bound.)
I’ve no doubt this story will be picked up by Bollywood sites looking for online-filler, but this article simply doesn’t qualify as news, much less, cause for alarm.

Whether it was an accident or not, I can understand Aishwarya Rai keeping quiet w/the rumors of suing until she verifies the accounts of what happened. But BECAUSE of the fact that light skin color IS such a horror of an issue in India as well as other countries where it is a common occurrence for people to take however many devastatingly harmful risks as possible to make their skin lighter and sooooooo many women of ALL ethnicities and nationalities look up to her I believe she owes her fans and followers THAT much to at least speak out and address the issue so everyone knows her stance on the fact that it may or may not have been a mistake and it also may be an artistic way of producing her pictures but regardless she is not feeding the ridiculous frenzy that lighter is better. I believe that a statement of that notion should be given immediately however possible because while we are waiting around how long has that cover been around for people to see and be influenced by it. She owes it to everyone to do that much.

It is important for women, and men (who are also being targeted by big advertising campaigns), to keep in mind that the current crop of skin lightening products contain many that are harmful to health. There is no question that lighter skin is a beauty ideal in India, and many people in that country are influenced to try to lighten their skin by fashion magazines.

Aishwarya Rai is a beautiful woman, no doubt. And if Elle did digitally lighten her skin, shame on them. However, her skin is naturally quite fair, so this color could be true. Personally, I have fair skin skin, probably the same shade as her, and depending on the lighting, I could look extremely tan or just as fair as she does in these photos. I feel like people are making this blowing this issue up out of proportion. If Elle is at fault, they should issue an apology. If not, just accept that her skin can look different depending on the light.

Its so stupid to comment on a magazine charging it for whitening a model or actress. Any photo of a model or actress need to be corrected in photoshop in order to make the person look better. Whats wrong in showing someone fair? Indians have really funny mentality when it comes to celebrities. Accept everyone as what they r. Infact, Aish looks great aft making her fair in those photos, she looks like an european model. Any Indian look like an european only as their features are very similar to europeans and only colour makes the difference. Learn to appreciate others than being against. Shame on Indians to provoke every single issue a very big issue.

Well, this issue doesn’t just apply to India. It is everywhere. The U.K., U.S., France, India, Australia, this list could go on. It is shameful that people are stuck on color. There is talent in everyone regardless of the color.
