How Joe Zee Skipped The Epic Line At The McQueen Exhibit

Tonight the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit will close forever. Yes, forever. All of the incredible pieces will return to their rightful owners (the houses of McQueen and Givenchy, Daphne Guinness, assorted other collectors), and that will be that. But the Met is staying open until midnight to accomodate the crowds, and we would like to know just what lengths you’re going to for the once-in-a-lifetime show.

You’ve had all summer (well, actually more than that — it’s been open since May 4th) to catch the Costume Institute exhibit. In an effort to deal with the hoards of people turning out to see McQueen’s work, the Met extended the exhibit’s run, opened its doors on Mondays, and stayed open late during the show’s final week. And now Savage Beauty is closing in mere hours, and you still have yet to see it…what’s a fashion junkie to do?

You can’t exercise your membership status to skip the line anymore, since the museum revoked those privileges a few days ago. And once you do get in, the audio tour is no longer an option (though it’s totally unnecessary anyway). Racked reports that, inexplicably, there are in fact several lines on this last day, and that fights have broken out among the crowds. Yikes. Sounds like the best plan of action is to go the Joe Zee route.

Yesterday Elle‘s creative director sheepishly tweeted: “No judgement please, but yes, I left the McQueen exhibition to the last day. Going tmrw – anyone know firsthand what the wait is like today?” A fan with the Twitter handle @Ale_Bond responded to Zee, explaining that she worked at the Met and could help a brother out. Here’s a little play-by-play:

Ah, the power of Twitter! So, dear readers, what means have you employed to make sure you see the exhibit? Any tales from the never-ending queue? Let us know in the comments!

Went to see the exhibit on Sunday. Waited for almost four hours, started haullunicating and thought Japanese sculptures were talking to me. Also, our line was very pleasant, no fights but people did start doing the wave. I’ve never been more thrilled that I waited that long for something, one of the most powerful and beautiful exhibits I have ever seen.

I live in Atlanta and flew to NYC last month to check it out!!  I didn’t have to wait at all….but only because I signed up for a membership to the MET and then purchased tickets to the Young Members Party!  It was absolutely incredible, and definitely worth the debt on my credit card I’ll slowly be paying off over the next couple of months!!!!

My husband and I reached the end of the line that stretched on forever at 11am Sunday.  We were told that from our point in line, we would have a 3 hour wait to get into the building and then another 3 hour wait in the McQueen line.  Harold Holzer (an absolutely AMAZING person and VP of External Affairs at the MET) spotted me in the line and told us to come with him.  He was taken by my ever-growing belly (I’m 6 months pregnant and feeling like a beached whale these days) and guided us in to the museum ahead of the lines!  While feeling a little bad that we got to skip the lines, I am forever indebted to Harold because I don’t think I would have been able to hold out for 6 hours to see this breathtaking exhibit.

Wow, that’s amazing! So you had never met him, he just wanted to help you out? Congrats!

I went to see it twice, once on the first week it opened (NO LINE!) and then again with my bf a few weeks later (like a 5 minute line).  LOVED IT, but I wish I had brought ear plugs both times because the tourist banter just disgusted me.
