Alexander Wang (Almost!) Confirmed For Balenciaga
Although Cathy Horyn may have beaten them to the punch, today WWD reports that Alexander Wang will be officially named as Nicolas Ghesquière‘s successor at Balenciaga by next week, citing “market sources.”
Ghesquière officially departs the label today after 15 years at the helm, and rumors suggest he might be taken under the wing of rival parent company LVMH if he wishes to start his own label in the near future. For now, however, all eyes will be on Wang as he takes on one of Paris’ stalwart fashion houses, a whole new realm of the industry for the downtown NYC wunderkind. WWD suggests that the partnership may indicate Balenciaga’s desire to “dial down the elitist, couture-like approach of Ghesquière, and open up to a broader audience with a designer prized for his sportswear approach and youthful energy.”
Neither party would comment on the appointment, but we imagine they’ll have plenty to say come next week.
