American Apparel Wants You to Give Them a Call
Got a gripe with American Apparel Skeev-EO Dov Charney? Well take a number, or better yet, take his number. That’s right, with a category 5 shitstorm brewing over revelations about the company’s discriminatory hiring practices, sizing practices and just about everything else, now the bum Los Angeles based clothier has decided to make Dov’s digits public.
“American Apparel has built itself on being open and honest, so we’re happy to answer questions and personally address the concerns of anyone interested in having a dialog,” the company explained in a statement on their website.
Not counting angry investors, we can think of a few people who might be more than a little interested in having a friendly dialog (read: tar and feathering) the Dovester. An underaged girl whose image his company vertically exploited? Or maybe one the employees who were let go for failing to live up to his rigorous Trya Banks worthy standards of”natural” beauty. You know the ones that mandated full body shots of all aspirant tee-shirt folders, outlawed Converse and basically made clear that AA stands for “Above Average” in the looks department.
Not sure you have a question or concern besides why you paid $50 for a grey v-neck? Well, we thoroughly suggest a quick review of the clothier’s stance on grooming practices as outlined in a few internal memos that have been making the rounds and causing quite a stir in the blogosphere. So beyond questionable.
a) Makeup is to be kept to a minimal- please take this very seriously. Liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner and eyeshadow are advised against; mascara must look very natural (ie. should not be clumpy or a color that does not compliment your skin and haircolor). Blush must not be overdone- should not have glitter or sparkles. Liquid foundation is prohibited (undereye concealer is understandable if it looks natural- ie. not clumpy or caked on, must match your skin tone). Please do not use a shiny gloss on your lips; any lipcolor must be subtle.
b) Eyebrows must not be overplucked. Full eyebrows are very much encouraged. Please do not dye your eyebrows a different color.
c) We encourage long, healthy, natural hair, so please be advised of the following:
-Hair must be kept your natural color.
-Blow-drying hair excessively could cause heat damage, so this is advised against.
-”Bangs” or “fringe” are advised against. It is not part of the direction we’re moving in.
Oh, and in case you’ve now got plenty of WTF’s running around in your head and want to air your grievances, here’s Dov’s number (213) 923-7943 and his email is dov@americanapparel.net. Or better yet, just have your lawyer give him a call. 10 points for who ever can come up with the most appropriate subject line.
