PHOTO: Did American Apparel Paste A White Hand Onto A Black Model? (UPDATED)

We’ve seen some pretty bad Photoshop misfires in our time, intentional and otherwise, but this one is a pretty flagrant example of either really careless and sloppy work or someone playing a sick joke.

The eagle eyes at Photoshop Disasters spotted a pair of pants on the American Apparel website being modeled by a Black torso with a white hand sticking into the pocket. Generally this pose is adopted by, you know, the model who’s wearing the pants because they want to show off the nifty stitching on an innovative slash pocket, but in this case it looks like some white person literally has their hand in the Black model’s pocket.

And that has to be what’s going on here — or at least that’s what we’re forcing ourselves to believe. Because no one at American Apparel thinks their customers are dumb enough to believe that someone with such a dark torso could possess a lily white hand. Right?

UPDATE: American Apparel tweeted at us to say that the model in that shot is wearing a sheer black bodysuit, which is what made the skin on her torso look darker. Our mistake!

And on second thought too, it does look like a sheer top. Still. Not worth the ink it would have used in an old school newspaper.

That is clearly not a black skin tone. I’m black and I’ve never met a black person with black skin and a white undertone before. DUH!! No one is that skin tone. Its a sheer black top.

Are you serious? Who the hell wrote this and why didn’t you see the sheer material on the model? How are you in “fashion” if you can’t tell the difference? I really don’t mean to be hurtful or rude but to claim racism is pretty heavy and really should have info backing it. Please be more responsible!
