WATCH: Honey Boo Boo Child’s Mom Tries To Justify Not Saving For College

Alana “Honey Boo Boo Child” Thompson and her mother June have been on a media tour of epic proportions ever since they first appeared on Toddlers and Tiaras. But today’s episode of Anderson, which was devoted to four well known pageant moms from the show, June and some of the other mothers tried to make it seem OK that they were spending gobs of money on getting their daughters ready for pageants and not on other life-enhancing things.

The show, which touched on a lot of topics — like whether or not young children should be plied with tons of sugar and caffeine to keep them energized to what it would feel like for an adult to be dressed up as a pageant toddler — also visited the sensitive issue of the cost of the pageants. One mom said she’d spent up to $25,000 on her daughter’s competitions, while another had spent closer to $5,000. June was in the middle with about $15,000. Alana, meanwhile, hasn’t had any cash earnings yet.

But the thing that bothered us the most was that June tried say it was OK for her to spend that much money on Alana’s pageants because other parents pay for their children to do other extracurricular activities.

“It’s a sport for her. It’s just like basketball or baseball or anything. Parents spend money on that. Why can’t we spend money on our child to do a pageant?”

She’s right in that she should be able to do whatever she wants with the money she has, but there’s a difference between sending a child to soccer practice and feeding her with tons of sugary carcinogens and then taking her to get her makeup done professionally.
