FHM ‘Apologizes’ For Calling Andrej Pejic A ‘Thing’
FHM has apologized for the firestorm of controversy it caused by calling androgynous male model Andrej Pejic “a thing.” But the magazine, which ranked Pejic 98th in its annual 100 Sexiest Women In The World list this year, didn’t really make up for the insensitive words it posted about Pejic with the apology statement, which we find to be short on substance and entirely unsatisfactory.
The magazine published a pithy apology on its website on Monday without much fanfare, succinctly explaining that the entry wasn’t “subbed” (we guess that means edited?) before it went live and was taken down shortly thereafter. Below, the statement in full:
Andrej Pejic appears at number 98 in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2011.
Regrettably the copy accompanying Andrej’s online entry wasn’t subbed prior to going live. Once we realised, we removed it immediately and apologised for any offence caused.
FHM has spoken to the individual concerned and taken steps to ensure this can never happen again.
Clearly, when they say the individual concerned, they mean whichever insecure straight guy wrote this hogwash to begin with. Also, clearly, they don’t regret any of the wantonly ignorant things their writer strung together about Pejic’s career and impact on the industry, just that their editors couldn’t clean them up before they were published.
Normally we don’t put much stock in magazines like FHM or Maxim, because for the most part they were started specifically as an advertiser’s route to guys too embarrassed to buy Penthouse at their corner bodegas. But when you carelessly publish untrue and aggressively stupid things about industry game changers, you run the risk of pissing off a few people. Us included.
