Andrej Pejic Once Faked A Pregnancy By Wearing A Styrofoam Baby Bump

Fans of Andrej Pejic are in for a treat with New York Magazine’s Fall Fashion Issue, which features the gender-bending model on the cover and as the subject of a lengthy profile. Most notably, Pejic is topless on the cover, which makes us wonder NYC-based Barnes & Noble outposts plan on displaying the glossy but more importantly, the profile reveals Pejic to be as thoughtful, hilarious, and intelligent as he is beautiful.

The piece opens with what is probably a regular occurrence: an unassuming heterosexual male (this one pudgy and with a Brooklyn accent) sees Pejic on the street and more or less falls in love. Pejic handles it with polite and non-confrontational aplomb. But he later reveals that he understands the gender politics at play in his androgyny.

And though he may not exactly bristle at the gender distinctions made by others, he does question their underlying assumptions. “In this society, if a man is called a woman, that’s the biggest insult he could get.” He arches his eyebrows skeptically and asks, “Is that because women are considered something less?”

And on top of that, the guy is just flat out funny. Take, for example, his take on the fact that despite being one of the most buzzed about models in the industry, he makes nowhere near what a woman of his reputation might.

“I don’t get out of bed for less than $50 a day,” he deadpanned. “I want to make that clear to America. This is a new age of androgynous supermodels. We don’t get out of bed for less than $50 a day.”

And finally, he knows exactly how to poke fun at the industry and its hilariously unattainable standards: by faking a pregnancy, of course!

Later, standing by the pool on the hotel terrace, he told Werts about a stunt he pulled at the airport in Brazil. “You know how those Victoria’s Secret models, they have a baby and then they pop it out and then the next week, they’re skinny and they’re shooting and they’re on the runway?” Pejic paused for dramatic effect. “Well, I was going to do it in a day. That was the idea.” Having told his agents to alert the press to “a surprise,” he’d arrived at the airport with a foam-filled baby bump, only to be apprehended at customs by officers who thought he might be smuggling drugs in his belly.

“And then did they let you keep it?” Werts asked of the phantom child.

“They let me keep it!”
