Quadriplegic Model Angela Rockwood Lands A Nordstrom Campaign
We applaud any company that breaks the mold when it comes to campaign models, but it’s especially great to see a major mass retailer like Nordstrom employing people who represent a wide range of shapes, colors, and abilities (they don’t have cookie-cutter customers, after all). Their latest laudable casting choice is Angela Rockwood, a gorgeous wheelchair-bound model and one of the stars of Sundance Channel‘s Push Girls, which airs tonight at 10 p.m.
Rockwood was in a car accident 11 years ago, which left her without the use of her legs and with very limited use of her arms, and since then her modeling career had pretty much fallen by the wayside. But thanks to the publicity she’s earned on the small screen, her career looks like it’s back on track in a big way.
People StyleWatch sat down with the 36-year-old to talk about the significance of her major new gig:
“There weren’t many models in chairs to make a statement like, ‘Hey we are the consumers too!’ and ‘Who doesn’t want to look sexy or fashionable sitting in a wheelchair?…When I was on set for Nordstrom, I felt like I was at ‘home’ again. It was like throwing a fighter back in the ring to win their belt after a major setback from a recovering injury.’”
And it’s pretty clear from the behind-the-scenes video taken from tonight’s season finale that not only is Rockwood back in the ring, she also throws a knockout punch in front of a camera, and has the eloquence, confidence, and poise to back it up. Work it, girl! Isn’t it nice to see the fashion industry put a truly inspirational woman in the spotlight for a change?
