WATCH: Anna Dello Russo Taped Crystal Renn’s Eyes To Look More Asian

We are huge fans of both Anna Dello Russo and Crystal Renn. As such, an editorial styled by ADR and starring Renn should be something we’re really into. We’re not.

ADR oh-so-innocently posted a behind-the-scenes video of her most recent Vogue Nippon shoot with Renn. All of the clothes are sparkly, star-spangled Dolce & Gabbana threads, and Renn poses like the pro she is. But there’s a huge problem. Renn’s eye’s are taped so that she appears Asian.

This is only slightly more subtle than the use of blackface in fashion magazines, and just as offensive. If they wanted an Asian-looking model (which would make sense, given Vogue Nippon is a Japanese magazine), then they should have cast an actual Asian model. And if they wanted to cast Renn, they shouldn’t have tried to change her race.

We recently saw American Vogue do a similar thing to another one of our favorite models, Karlie Kloss. Kloss shot a spread in China for the September issue, and she’s not only styled to appear Asian, she is also photographed in the most stereotypical of situations.

Check out the photos and video of Renn below. Do you find the editorial offensive?

I’m kind of torn… It’s like they want to make Renn more relate-able to the Japanese public but at the same time… it’s unnecessary.

I like that you’re trying to keep it real. But, in this case I think you’re overstating the case, Styleite. I’m sure that in Japan, Vogue readers know who Crystal Renn is — and that she’s not Asian. Regardless of the “taping,” Renn still looks Renn-ly.

Leave it to Vogue to insult BOTH cultures, near and far.  Do you really think the asians are going to be “fooled” by the taping?  Do you really think anyone in American is going to be “fooled” by the taping?  No, and no.

am I insulted? no not at all. am I impressed? not really..
I believe the message is how western cultures are now adapting to Asian cultures and possibly standards of beauty(?) verses “Asians converting to western standards” or I could be wrong

hmmm.. that’s a little bit too much. why not to choose asian model?

Another non story from racist sensationalist bloggers. Renn looks like Renn, Not asian. And FYI many white models have naturally almond eyes like that for ex. Karlie Kloss and Magdalena Frackowiak among many others. Ironically “taping” is what asians use to make their eyes look wider not “asian”.

I believe this is meant to re-sensationalize the beauty that asian eyes uniquely possess. Many women and even some men from asian countries get surgery to make their eyes more caucasian-looking, AKA adding an eyelid. I believe ADR was trying to almost play up an alternate reality where white people strive to look more asian, and I also think her message really was “Look, asian eyes are beautiful too!”

It’s hard to argue one side or the other without really knowing the reality of what they were trying to portray. I don’t think there was any ill-intentions on this one, though.

aye people get over it they make white people tanner, black people lighter, etc… and the reverse. it’s ART. Come on Chris Brown and Swizz Beatz are coming out with a song “Get drunk like a white girl” should everyone be offended by everything now-a-days? with in reason it’s just art… let it go.
