Anna Wintour Wants Amar’e Stoudemire On The Cover of Vogue

Whatever Anna Wintour wants, Anna Wintour gets. So it’s reasonable to expect that New York Knicks forward center Amar’e Stoudemire will grace the cover of Vogue at some point relatively soon.

Page Six reports that the editor has been giving the basketball star Vogue‘s full court press. She personally invited him to attend the Fashion’s Night Out show at Lincoln Center last night, and there’s a rumor that he’ll sit next to Hamish Bowles at the Tommy Hilfiger show on Saturday. We can only imagine what they’re going to talk about until the lights go down.

And either the charm offensive is working, or Stoudemire knows that to say no to Wintour would be a mistake of near-biblical proportions. “Amar’e wasn’t planning on going out last night, but he changed his mind after getting the invite from Anna,” a friend of Stoudemire’s told Page Six.

Wintour just got done licking the wounds from the last time she featured a basketball player on a cover. When she had LeBron James pose with Gisele Bundchen for the front in April 2008, she made him look like King Kong, and some accused her and photographer Annie Liebovitz of perpetuating the scary black man stereotype.

So we’ll hope this time around she’ll be a little more sensitive. And if anything, it’ll be interesting to see another man on the cover of the magazine — there have only been three (James and actors George Clooney and Richard Gere) in the magazine’s history.
