Anne Hathaway Addresses Crotch Shot Photo: ‘It Made Me Sad’

While she may have laughed off the unfortunate photos as yesterday’s luncheon in New York honoring the release of Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway addressed the images head on in an eloquent and candid interview with Matt Lauer this morning on the Today Show.

On Tuesday, the New York Post overheard Hathaway joking about the photos with guests at the Four Seasons.

“I found out [about the pictures] just as I came in. And I just thought, ‘OK, where’s the comedy?’ ” She added, “It has hit. It has landed. A bomb has gone off. I think what I am going to do is whatever my next appearance is . . . I’m going to step out of the car in a blanket. You’ve got to laugh at it.”

This morning, Lauer opened his interview with Hathaway by leering, “We’ve seen a lot of you lately…” To which the Les Mis star and Oscar nominee responded:

“It was obviously an unfortunate incident. I think — it kind of made me sad on two accounts. One, I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis because that is what my character is. She is someone forced to sell sex… So, yeah, let’s get back to Les Mis.”

Point, Hathaway. Check out her interview below.

Well, she is no Britney Spears. Way too puny.

Irony alert: “And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants.” No one who wore that getup is an unwilling participant.

  • Anonymous

Wow, that’s just one step shy of, “She was asking for it.” You’re a Tea Party voter, I assume.

  • APS

    She is remarkable. Brava!

  • Anonymous

Re-enforces the notion that too many people are sexually repressed if they’re obsessed with a picture of a vagina

  • Anonymous

We can all pray that in the future society no longer “commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants”.

While we wait for God to grant us this wish, we can do our part by wearing a freaking underwear while travelling in public.

  • http://www.facebook.com/donatello.nobatti.1 Donatello Nobatti

Well Duh….didn’t you know Styleite is an oasis for Tea Party types? (Eye-roll)

No one’s saying she’s “asking for” anything, and I don’t really care how much she shows off. But let’s get real and admit that Hollywood and the ‘commoditization of sexuality’ are more or less synonymous. Anne is surely aware of that and I don’t think she feels sorry about that reality.

  • gordon bloyer

The shot was for Rachael Maddow.

Wanna bet that Matt Lauer has this pic as his wallpaper? Why bring it up, Matt?

  • Orestes Ippeau

… unless it’s the only one they’ve ever seen, or, they’ve never seen one up close and personal. Then they’re just repressed or unlucky, feeling miserable and nothing else.

Word: most people tend to be naked beneath their clothes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/donatello.nobatti.1 Donatello Nobatti

Hey gordon i’ll bet that joke will go over just dandy at your friday KKK meeting.

  • Anonymous

Did it make you sad when you decided not to wear underwear?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kerry-R-Jennings/1514425230 Kerry R Jennings

LOL SO the Tart goes san’s panties in public and she feels sad LMFAO

  • Diana

She knew she wasn’t wearing underwear so it was her responsibility, as an adult, to be careful not to show anything she didn’t want displayed. However, I am sorry for her and it is sad that someone took a picture and that others are anxious to view the photograph. (What was photographed, apparently, was her external genitalia, which would be referred to as the vulva. The vagina is an internal organ and, one would presume, not something that was visible in photo.)

  • Patrick Heckman

No Bloyer the shot was for old men like you who will never see a womans privates up close. SO now go back and watch Fox News, hopefully that Crowder guy is getting assaulted again,

  • Jack Robbins

Ms. Hathaway is about as smart an actress as you are likely to find. That was a very articulate and intelligent discussion of that issue–and in remarkably few words.

  • Anonymous

She’s naked in almost every one of her movies. Whats the big deal?

  • Jay Hanig

Thank you for clearing all of that up.

  • Anonymous

Finding the uncensored shots ─ that’s the ‘hard’ part!

  • http://twitter.com/too_much_hutch_ James Hutchison

Here is some eloquence and candidness– WEAR SOME FREAKIN UNDERWEAR… ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE WEARING A SKIRT!

  • Anonymous

Well, if she shaved, something only prostitutes used to do, then maybe she did want to show it off. Don’t shave and you have natural underwear.

  • Robin

Well all I have to say is …
    1. I’m sorry you can’t afford TV, internet, or even a newspaper…. perhaps you might have known this could have happen if you had only seen the pictures of your fellow stars (Brittney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Etc….)

    2. I’m sorry you have lost all feeling below the waist that you can’t feel the breeze on your private parts.
    3. I’m sorry you can’t afford panties.
    4. I’m sorry you would be willing to expose yourself to get publicity for yourself and your new movie Les Mis.
    but MOST of all
    5. I am SORRY our kids have yet another person they look up to act in such a disgusting way….

    What a class act!

  • Anonymous

Lauer opened his interview with Hathaway by leering, “We’ve seen a lot of you lately…”

I could see Lauer excusing himself to use the “restroom” right afterwards…hopefully his mic wouldnt still be on.

  • MarkH

Her response was quite true, but why did she put herself in that position in the first place?

  • billythekidinny

Everybody has a crotch. Act like adults and stop trying to act as if it doesn’t exist.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrea.little.50 Andrea Little

You wouldn’t be famous if you didn’t have “sex appeal” so you too are selling yourself for sex.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrea.little.50 Andrea Little

But we don’t expose it for the cameras. And most of us wear underwear.

  • Leon Fenler

    next up, Lauer skidmarks….

  • Poosauce

I had so much respect for her until this. I mean really, after what happened a few years ago with brittney, Lindsay and Paris flashing their crotchets every other week… Girlfriend knew exactly what she was doing when she went commando. I mean, that’s one way to try to sell your otherwise boring sounding movie about French peasants. It’s just the trashy, no integrity way.

  • http://twitter.com/C41151GNwh1t3y Bill

Honestly, with the way these “stars” pose for wardrobe shots, I almost want to slap them and remind them how F’N stupid they look. It’s all pointless in the end. Though the elegantly shaven public hair shot was refreshing. Makes me feel that much closer to something I’ll never touch.

  • Diaweyr

What a classy lady! I adore her.

  • SketchedLilly

Why is everyone so horrified? It’s just a vagina. She didn’t wear underwear because the lines would have been way too clear through her super sleek silk dress. A lot of starletts don’t wear underwear for events like that for that exact reason. She didn’t flash on purpose…it’s not like she went prancing up the red carpet with her skirt pulled over her head.
I think the incredibly bold boots she wore is far more interesting than the fact that she has lady-bits and they occassionally see the light of day.
    What are you people? Puritans?

  • jess

this “boring sounding movie” is based on an incredibly famous book and musical and makes many important points about society. and it therefore quite interesting. i don’t understand why you have lost any respect for her when it was actually an accident. she didn’t go out looking for attention. she had a formal dress on and didn’t wear underwear – lots of people don’t wear underwear because the lines show under the dress.

  • jess

this is exactly the kind of disgusting attitude that we need to get rid of in society. it makes ME sad that people will constantly blame her for this when they should never violate her privacy. any decent person wouldn’t show the photo, but unfortunately everyone is too obsessed with money to care about another human being’s feelings. this shitty attitude – that is was “her fault” – does extend to rape too. it was “her fault” for wearing “revealing clothes”, her fault for travelling alone at night – women shouldn’t even leave the house -, her fault for drinking too much. but never the fault of fucking rapist who can’t control himself when he sees a girl.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gemma.daviees Gemma Daviees

I’m sorry that your kids are subjected to your victim-blaming mentality and I’m sorry they are going to grow up learning that it’s ok to be bitchy and to justify the actions of perverts and judge women based on your own misguided assumptions. I’m sorry that you are so pathetic that you need to speak in a derogatory manner about another women to feel high and mighty. I’m sorry that people like you are raising children to accept the rape culture/ victim blaming society we live in is ok.

  • Poosauce

Yeah “accident”. I bet you think reality shows are real too

  • Kaye Hutchins

Ladies, learn how to get in and out of a car! Pivot on your butt and keep your bloody knees together!!! I learned that in “charm school” when I was 10 years old!
