Anne Hathaway Finally Addresses The Oscars Valentino Snub

We were seriously hoping for Anne Hathaway to wow us in a custom Valentino creation at the Oscars after getting confirmation from the house itself. But, as the story goes, she wore Prada. It was a particularly rude sartorial snub since Valentino Garavani himself designed a gorgeous wedding gown for the Les Mis star, and she hung out with him on New Year’s Eve. Hathaway has been quiet about the matter, and we ourselves have concocted a good number of explanations, but now the actress has released an official statement on the snafu.

Hathaway’s rep, Stephen Huvane, issued the following to WWD on behalf of the actress:

“It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans. Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself.  I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”

There’s obviously no publicly-available sketch or image of the original Valentino dress that Hathaway had planned to wear, though some outlets have proposed their own suggestions. A Prada spokesperson also told the paper: “It’s our policy never to comment and we can’t make any statements out of respect for our fellow designers.”

See Hathaway’s Prada below, and chime in on the sartorial scandal: should she have gone with the original plan?

Legit. If she’d worn the dress it would have been way worse.

Leave it to the media to stir up drama where there isn’t any.

I love you Anne, but wearing the dress would have only made it better. This was a mess, with the unfilled bodice and hot mess in the back. Sorry Anne–big disappointment..Don’t fix it, if it ain’t broke??

Now let’s play the ‘so who wore her Valentino?’ game.

It was the McQueen worn by Amada Seyfried. and seeing as they were in the same cast for a movie up for best picture, it makes sense for her to change her dress. If Valentino isn’t pissed, lets all just let it go.
