The W LOVE Hangover Ball was billed as an evening “inspired by the legendary New York vogueing scene,” so you’d be forgiven for thinking the red carpet would draw the most outré crowd of the evening. However that dubious honor definitely rests with the ARIA Awards in Sydney, Australia, which played host to a slew of outfits featuring cutouts, neon, and sideboob a’plenty.
Taylor Swift, never the most zany of dressers, bucked the trend and went with a classic cream Elie Saab. There’s no doubt that it was an elegant choice, but the singer looked out of place (and, we’re sorry to say, rather gaunt) as she posed for the cameras. Nicki Minaj, meanwhile, was in her element in psychedelic leggings and a matching crop top with swinging rainbow fringe, though we imagine she isn’t used to having so much competition in the crazy costume department.
Among the wildest ensembles of the night were Ruby Rose‘s cartoonish Romance is Born dress, Sarah DeBono‘s Ronald McDonald-inspired getup, and Kimbra‘s feathered number by Sydney designer Anna Langdon. We’re not sure what happened to the “Somebody That I Used To Know” singer since her stylish turn on SNL, but paired with a full face of heavy makeup, last night’s look veered way into eyesore territory.
By comparison, the W event in NYC seemed rather tame, with models like Lily Donaldson, Anja Rubik, and Nicole Trunfio opting for all-over neutrals, save for Rubik’s enviably luxe brocade Anthony Vaccarello jacket, and host Kelly Osbourne choosing an emerald Jean Charles de Castelbaljac number whose unusual print was toned down by its demure silhouette.
