Australia’s Next Top Model Judge Reportedly Attempts Suicide
Australia’s Next Top Model judge and former model Charlotte Dawson is recovering from a suicide attempt on Wednesday after a severe case of cyber-bullying on Twitter. She’s currently staying in a psychiatric emergency unit at a hospital in Darlington, Australia.
It’s unclear why the 46-year-old became a target for cyber-bullies. It could have stemmed from the fact that she recently called her home country New Zealand “small, nasty and vindictive”, or because she herself is an advocate for anti-bullying, or because anonymous Twitter users are just cruel trolls. Either way, users sent disgusting messages, and many of the tweets read that Dawson should hang herself. She retweeted all of them.
On Tuesday, Dawson identified one of the trolls as a university employee in Melbourne. The employee was put on leave while the university investigated the situation, but this just resulted in more nasty messages from other Twitter users. On Wednesday, she tweeted “Hope this ends the misery ..” and “You win x”, and soon after, an emergency crew was called to her home.
A close friend tweeted that Dawson is in the psychiatric emergency unit, and a hospital spokesperson says that she’s doing fine.
