What Happens When A Fashion Designer Makes A Barbie Dreamhouse
For Barbie’s 50th birthday four years ago, fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic gave the doll a “makeover” that involved dark hair, a purple jacket, and a bondage skirt, plus a suit outfit with metallic pants. Now, in a new collaboration with Barbie company Mattel, Ilincic has created a “Dreamhouse” for Barbie that is equally edgy and unexpected.
Instead of the typical pink, plastic, and girly residence usually attributed to Barbie, the new design has Communist era-inspired metal and concrete, with a rooftop forest and absolutely no mirrors. It will also have an enormous library. Ilincic says, “It’s a Kafka-like space which has so much information and is so tall she may need to take an elevator to the top of the shelves.” She also says she want the house “to feel like being in Russia, in Siberia.”
We think it sounds pretty cool. Barbie’s supposed to be stylish, so it’s good that Mattel has realized bubble gum pink is incredibly passe.
Unfortunately, though, you won’t be able to buy it for your hip nieces or daughters. The design will realize itself in the form of a “virtual Dreamhouse” created by SHOWstudio through 3D rendering. You’ll be able to experience it online starting Monday.
