PHOTOS: Photographer Ben Watts Put Topless Models On Skateboards
Last night, denim maestros 3×1 hosted a soiree to celebrate their latest collaboration with photographer Ben Watts: a series of skateboard decks featuring models including Behati Prinsloo and Chanel Iman rocking 3x1s and not much else.
It was a very downtown affair, hosted at the brand’s sleek Soho store-cum-gallery space, with attendees running the gamut from Jude Law, Sean Avery, and Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss to The Terminal Presents‘ Jenne Lombardo and Marchesa‘s Keren Craig.
So why skateboards? Watts filled us in:
“I think they really lend themselves to the project. I’m about fashion, sports, music, and popular culture and the deck presents itself as a great canvas.”
Indeed, fashion seems to be quite enamored of skateboard decks as of late. Remember the set with Arizona Muse and Freja Beha Erichsen a few months back? Or the Sproused-out Louis Vuitton rendition? The 3×1 + Ben Watts boards set themselves apart from the pack with their charitable component. The proceeds from sales will go to charities handpicked by the models such as Keep A Child Alive (Iman) and Polaris Project (Hosk).
And while we think Victoria’s Secret angel Prinsloo looks like she’d be right at home on a board (last night we were eyeing the model’s badass leather Misfits jacket with envy), Watts didn’t pick his subjects for their ollie skills.
“Do they skate to castings? I’d say no, but they’re still all about it. I’ve worked with all of them before and it was such a pleasure to have them give up their time so willingly and get down and pose. I think the final product speaks for itself. It’s colorful and it’s dynamic.”
The boards are available on 3×1.us for $125 each or $500 for the set of five.
