WATCH: A Style Inspiration Breakdown Of Beyonce’s New Video For Countdown
Oh, artistic allusions. When done right, even just one can be an interesting reminder of a statement gone by. Luckily for us, Beyonce‘s new music video for Countdown is chock full of references to, well, basically every good thing that has ever happened in pop culture ever.

In a lot of ways, this video sort of feels like it belongs to the school of Beyonce’s last album, B’Day. Because on top of her black hair and her baby bump (which she shows off at several different levels of pregnancy), B alludes to everything from Audrey Hepburn‘s famous dance in Funny Face to Twiggy‘s kohl eye makeup from back in the day — even Jennifer Beal‘s one-shouldered practice clothing in Flashdance gets a nod. Pop in a little pop art from Andy Warhol, mix in some general 60s mod feeling and a high school marching band drum line and you’re in for the treat of your life. Your life, we say!
And we’re so relieved, because some of the other videos from this album have been weird. Not bad, but just not great. This video is classic Beyonce, and it acknowledges that she wouldn’t be the artist she is today if she didn’t have the awesome people who came before her as examples. It’s sort of like a thank-you note to history.
