Single Buyer Purchases Bill Cunningham’s Hats For $20K

Did you manage to snag one of Bill Cunningham’s hats last week? No? Well, that’s probably because all 23 of the William J toppers went to a single buyer.

The anonymous buyer paid about $20,000 for the entire collection, and she did so within 10 minutes of the sale going live on 1stdibs.com. According to WWD, she is “an arts patron and friend of the cycling street-style photographer” who plans to donate the chapeaus to an art museum in New York City.

Could a photo-and-hat Cunningham retrospective be in the works? We sure hope so. Once more, here are those fanciful toppers:
