It’s Official: Natalie Portman Did 80% Of The Dancing In Black Swan

Darren Aronofsky did the math, and it’s official: Natalie Portman was responsible for 80% of the dancing in Black Swan. This number is close to Benjamin Millepied‘s estimated 85%, and a far cry from body double Sarah Lane‘s 5% claim.

Like any responsible director, Aronofsky had the film’s editor go through the final cut of the movie and count the number of scenes that feature Portman doing her thing: “There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math that’s 80% Natalie Portman. Natalie sweated long and hard to deliver a great physical and emotional performance. And I don’t want anyone to think that’s not her they are watching. It is.”

So, now we know! This weekend the filmmakers issued a response to Lane’s heated defense explaining that Portman did in fact do most of the dancing herself, but the number crunching settles the case once and for all. We’re glad this story is finally done, but that’s not to say Lane won’t come back with a rebuttal. However, we wouldn’t advise she do so.

Let’s get things straight here. Lane didn’t say Natalie did 5% of the dancing, what she said was:

“Of the full body shots, I would say 5% are Natalie. All the other shots are me. The shots that are just her face with arms, those shots are definitely Natalie, but that doesn’t show the actual dancing.”

OF THE FULL BODY SHOTS, she said 5% are Natalie. If you read Aronosky’s rebuttal, he isn’t disputing this. He says 80% *of the dancing shots* are Natalie, not the dancing full body shots. Many of the dancing shots are not full body. So Lane isn’t necessarily wrong here.

I agree with Catherine (above comment) on this one.

And the more it seems like Natalie did most of the dancing, the better their press/interest/etc, so of course he’s going to claim it regardless.

Absolutely…watching the film carefully, there are few shots where its clearly Natalie from top to bottom. Most of the dance shots of Natalie are from the waist up and who knows exactly what her feet are doing. Of course, well not necessarily of course, but essentially Natalie like many fine versatile actors come to the table with talents and abilities that serve them well in their work. Think Jaime Fox in Ray. But even for someone who trained trained “professionally” (from Natalie’s interviews, she stopped studying when her film career started to take off and she would have been about 14/15 by then) then stopped dancing for almost 10 years may not be Black Swan realistic so why on earth do we believe Natalie would be? Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s a wonderful actress and have long been a fan, but its insane to think she did most of the fullbody dancing required to make the film (maybe what ended up in the film but…) Its like when the Flashdance woman (totally space her name) said she couldn’t even dance. Seriously (and now I’m being 15% funny here, only Angie does 85% of her stunts…:) Keep it real people!

Sorry, I don’t believe anything Darren or Fox studios say about what little involvement Sarah Lane had in Black Swan. If they had the audacity to tell Sarah to keep mum about her work in the film until AFTER awards season, as well as not give credit where it is due to Sarah — there is no accountability left in them for anyone to believe anything they are claiming.

I truly respect Sarah Lane as a dancer — and the lengths that Darren, Fox, and Natalie’s fiance, Benjamin, are going to discredit her are unfortunate and absolutely tasteless. This article didn’t mention Benjamin, but he as well is discrediting Sarah. You would think that as a fellow ballet dancer himself, he would choose wisely with whose other ballet toes he steps on, right? If anything, he would know firsthand how much work and life’s dedication goes into being a ballerina but clearly, Benjamin has no shame.

Anyone with dance, specifically ballet, experience knows that it is impossible to achieve the complicated choreography done in the film – no matter whom your instructor/trainer is. Furthermore, anyone familiar with ballet would recognize how atrocious Natalie’s “swan arms” and footwork were in the film. Although she may have trained to be able to pull off the physique of a ballet dancer, besides that — I do not believe for one second that Natalie was able to pull off that choreography in under a mere TWO years of “training.”

I loved the film and I am a fan of Natalie but the way this ugly ordeal was played out in the media by Darren and Fox choosing to tell Sarah to keep her mouth shut – REALLY turns me off.

I like stuntmen. They do the hardest, most dangerous work on a movie but most people never know their names. And they understand that their job is rather to make the stars look good.I saw Black Swan twice! and both of them at home. I downloaded it from http://www.torrentoff.com and for me is no matter who dance instead of Natalie! Sarah Lane seems to not understand the kind of honor system that motivates stunt men to stand away from the spotlight. I can’t realize why she is complaining to that she did most of the full body dancing in the movie, which won Portman an Oscar.

I was a professional ballerina myself and I must say ballet used to indeed be my life.I saw the movie but the dancing to be completely honest was not all that amazing even though it was quite good.I did my ballet training with The Bolshoi Ballet for 18 years so I am not trying to be insulting to any of the dancers in the movie, the classical ballet of Russia is very different.
